It is a journey into the world of religious heritage and spirituality that is worth experiencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-2ccdc2dc-afc5-46e0-a689-97e71e2cab1c\" data-mobilecollapse=\"false\" data-desktopcollapse=\"true\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-block-29071446-3d24-4e08-93ab-4c84358687af\">\n                <div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title-wrap\"\" aria-controls=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-0-2ccdc2dc-afc5-46e0-a689-97e71e2cab1c\" tabindex=\"0\">\n                    <p class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title ub-content-toggle-title-2ccdc2dc-afc5-46e0-a689-97e71e2cab1c\">Metropolitan Church of Aghios Georgios<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-toggle-wrap right\"><span class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-state-indicator wp-block-ub-chevron-down\"><\/span>\n                    <\/div><\/div><div role=\"region\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-content-wrap ub-hide\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-0-2ccdc2dc-afc5-46e0-a689-97e71e2cab1c\">\n\n<p>The Metropolitan Church of Aghios Georgios is one of the most important and oldest churches in the city, and many great events from Greek history took place here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is believed to have been built at around the beginning of the 16th century, during the time of the first Venetian occupation of the city, but after the invasion of the city by the Turks in 1540,<strong>&nbsp;it was turned into a mosque.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/mitr-naos-agiou-georgiou-00001-jpg-webp-webp.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/mitr-naos-agiou-georgiou-00001-jpg-webp-webp.webp 640w, https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/mitr-naos-agiou-georgiou-00001-jpg-webp-webp-300x253.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In 1686,<\/strong>&nbsp;when the Venetians successfully retook the city from the Turks, the church of Aghios Georgios was the<strong>&nbsp;site of the reception for the victorious commander-in-chief, Francesco Morosini,<\/strong>&nbsp;and a service of thanks was held here.<strong>&nbsp;During the second Turkish occupation,&nbsp;<\/strong>the church was once again turned into a mosque, and after the liberation of the city in 1822, Aghios Georgios became Orthodox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The church is built in the basilica style,<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>with a dome and murals&nbsp;<\/strong>that must have been created during the second Venetian occupation, around the beginning of the 18th century, in a western style. It was here,<strong>\u00a0amidst great solemnity<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0that the funeral service of the murdered Greek governor, Ioannis Kapodistrias was held.<\/strong>\u00a0His embalmed remains were placed in the vestry for about six months, until 29th March 1832.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"315\" height=\"236\" src=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/mitr-naos-agiou-georgiou-00005-jpg-webp-webp.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/mitr-naos-agiou-georgiou-00005-jpg-webp-webp.webp 315w, https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/mitr-naos-agiou-georgiou-00005-jpg-webp-webp-300x225.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 315px) 100vw, 315px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"315\" height=\"236\" src=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/mitr-naos-agiou-georgiou-00004-jpg-webp-webp.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2379\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/mitr-naos-agiou-georgiou-00004-jpg-webp-webp.webp 315w, https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/mitr-naos-agiou-georgiou-00004-jpg-webp-webp-300x225.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 315px) 100vw, 315px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It was to the church of Aghios Georgios that Otto<\/strong>, the first King of Greece, came on 25th January 1833,&nbsp;<strong>as soon as he landed in Nauplion.&nbsp;<\/strong>Today, the throne where the young Otto sat during services can still be seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The narthex and bell-tower were added in 1834<\/strong>&nbsp;by the regent who ruled until Otto came of age, in order to commemorate the king\u2019s arrival in the city. the Bourtzi and Arvanitias Square.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Geographical Coordinates<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Metropolitan Church of St. George, Nafplio<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/bSd5TBBzzFDAunBo7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google Map<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>37.56852212939232, 22.79886373843098<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-block-c21d671f-cfae-459c-b12a-84488f3c1bbc\">\n                <div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title-wrap\"\" aria-controls=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-1-2ccdc2dc-afc5-46e0-a689-97e71e2cab1c\" tabindex=\"0\">\n                    <p class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title ub-content-toggle-title-2ccdc2dc-afc5-46e0-a689-97e71e2cab1c\">The Church of Aghios Spyridon<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-toggle-wrap right\"><span class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-state-indicator wp-block-ub-chevron-down\"><\/span>\n                    <\/div><\/div><div role=\"region\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-content-wrap ub-hide\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-1-2ccdc2dc-afc5-46e0-a689-97e71e2cab1c\">\n\n<p>Construction on the Church of Aghios Spyridon\u00a0<strong>was completed in 1702<\/strong>, during the time of the second Venetian occupation of the city,\u00a0<strong>funded by the Nauplian Brotherhood of Orthodox Greeks.<\/strong>\u00a0It is a single nave church with a dome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ieros-naos-agiou-spyridonos-nafplio-00001-jpg-webp-webp.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ieros-naos-agiou-spyridonos-nafplio-00001-jpg-webp-webp.webp 640w, https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ieros-naos-agiou-spyridonos-nafplio-00001-jpg-webp-webp-300x225.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It was here, outside this church, that one of the blackest events in modern Greek history took place.\u00a0<strong>At dawn of 27th September 1831, Ioannis Kapodistrias was murdered<\/strong>\u00a0by the Maniatian brothers Georgios and Konstadinos Mavromichalis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-4 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"452\" src=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ieros-naos-agiou-spyridonos-nafplio-00002-jpg-webp-webp.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ieros-naos-agiou-spyridonos-nafplio-00002-jpg-webp-webp.webp 300w, https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ieros-naos-agiou-spyridonos-nafplio-00002-jpg-webp-webp-199x300.webp 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"452\" src=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ieros-naos-agiou-spyridonos-nafplio-00003-jpg-webp-webp.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ieros-naos-agiou-spyridonos-nafplio-00003-jpg-webp-webp.webp 300w, https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ieros-naos-agiou-spyridonos-nafplio-00003-jpg-webp-webp-199x300.webp 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kapodistrias<\/strong>&nbsp;was on his way to church, as was his habit<strong>&nbsp;every Sunday, to Aghios Spyridonas, which was consecrated to the patron saint of his birthplace, Corfu.&nbsp;<\/strong>At the entrance to the church, however, the two assasins were waiting for him, and, after they had greeted him, they attacked; Konstadinos Mavromichalis with a pistol, Georgios with a knife. The governor died instantly.&nbsp;<strong>Konstadinos Mavromichalis was chased and lynched by the furious crowd, while Georgios was executed a few days later.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The grief resulting from the death of the governor was great.&nbsp;<strong>His embalmed body was laid<\/strong>&nbsp;out in the Governors Mansion for many days for people to come and pay their respects, and his funeral was held on 18th October 1831 in a sombre ceremony in the church of Aghios Georgios.&nbsp;<strong>His internal organs were placed in an exquisite casket under the altar of Aghios Spyridonas.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-5 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-toggle-wrap right\"><span class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-state-indicator wp-block-ub-chevron-down\"><\/span>\n                    <\/div><\/div><div role=\"region\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-content-wrap ub-hide\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-2-2ccdc2dc-afc5-46e0-a689-97e71e2cab1c\">\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>The Church of Panaghia,&nbsp;<strong>consecrated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, is one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in the city.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The original church, which dates from the&nbsp;<strong>15th century<\/strong>, to the time of the first Venetian occupation,<strong>&nbsp;was smaller and belonged to the Orthodox Church.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In around 1700<\/strong>, during the time of the second Venetian occupation,&nbsp;<strong>the church took its current form<\/strong>, a three-aisled basilica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interior has a&nbsp;<strong>beautiful wooden chancel in the eptanisian style<\/strong>&nbsp;and was created in the 19th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The pulpit and bishop\u2019s throne are also in the same style.<\/strong>&nbsp;The narthex is a later addition, while the bell tower dates from 1907.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Church of Panaghia also celebrates the memory of Aghios Anastasios, the Patron Saint of the City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Every year, on 1st February, the saint\u2019s feast day, there is a great procession of the icon of the protector of the city.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"528\" is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>The church of Aghios Nikolaos,&nbsp;<strong>the patron saint of sailors<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>was built next to the port<\/strong>, in one of the most beautiful parts of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the inscription on the foundation stone, the church of Aghios Nikolaos&nbsp;<strong>was moved from inside the walled city to the shore on the wishes of the Venetian superintendent<\/strong>&nbsp;of the fleet Agostino Sagredo, in 1713.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sagredo chose this site<\/strong>, outside the city walls and next to the sea, as the church was dedicated to sailors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The modern church of Aghios Nikolaos must be more recent and was consecrated in (The scattered debris of the region around the monastery as well as its architectural style attests to its fortress-like nature). Following his Assumption (922AD), the Abbey was left deserted and came back to life in early 16th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>In the beginning of the Venetian reign,<\/strong>&nbsp;the \u201cChortatsi\u201d Cretan family, friends to the Venetians, were granted the administration of the Abbey, until it was finally devolved to the property of the Greek Estates,<strong>&nbsp;in 1835.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The recorded year of 1942 seems highly important, since the Abbey was administered to nuns and thus, became a nunnery.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, the nuns have contributed and conscientiously performed their duties,&nbsp;<strong>involving themselves in charitable and spiritual causes, while catering for the harmonious coexistence of the complex with the surrounding,<\/strong>&nbsp;environing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, the Abbey boasts<strong>&nbsp;a remarkable building structure, composed of churches,<\/strong>&nbsp;guestrooms and nun-solitary chambers. Almost all of the adjoining buildings alongside the tower have been torn down, manifesting a landscape of desertion. Andrianos)<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-toggle-wrap right\"><span class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-state-indicator wp-block-ub-chevron-down\"><\/span>\n                    <\/div><\/div><div role=\"region\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-content-wrap ub-hide\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-8-2ccdc2dc-afc5-46e0-a689-97e71e2cab1c\">\n\n<p>The Monastery, built really close to the region of \u201cAgios Andrianos\u201d and at the foot of the mountainous village of\u00a0<strong>\u201cArachnaio\u201d was also called \u201cXsirokasteli\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0(stressing the \u2013ste-syllable), yet rarely has it been used by the locals.\u00a0<strong>Now, the \u201cKarakalas\u201d term or nickname has been translated by the Turkish word of \u201cKurukule\u201d<\/strong>. The corruption of the word by the locals has brought it to its present sound. This explanation, among others, seems to be the most plausible, regarding the root of the name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/moni-agiou-dimitriou-karakala-agios-adrianos-01-jpg-webp-webp.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/moni-agiou-dimitriou-karakala-agios-adrianos-01-jpg-webp-webp.webp 640w, https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/moni-agiou-dimitriou-karakala-agios-adrianos-01-jpg-webp-webp-300x145.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>There is no exact date of the erection of the Monastery<\/strong>, though since 1696 there is a description of its massive property.\u00a0<strong>This is probably the theory towards the assumption that the nunnery<\/strong>\u00a0was up and running for centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>During the wage to reclaim the town of Nafplio from the Turks,<\/strong>&nbsp;the nunnery stepped in actively, supplying the rebellious cause with weaponry. Records point to the fact that the sanctuary was run by a Father Superior (Dionysios), six monks and fifteen (15) wage earners in 1829.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The present day \u201cVouleutiko\u201d building (Old Parliamentary House)&nbsp;<\/strong>is said to have been the place where the Turks erected their \u201ctemenos\u201d (place of worship) out of the preserved material left, after the nunnery sustained huge fire damage at the beginning of the 19th century.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"237\" src=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/moni-agiou-dimitriou-karakala-agios-adrianos-02-jpg-webp-webp.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2424 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u03a4In 1928, the Monastery was expropriated and was divided to local shepherds,\u00a0<\/strong>to have their livestock graze.\u00a0<strong>\u201cKarakalas\u201d Monastery also suffered two merges, one in 1934<\/strong>\u00a0with the Monastery \u201cTalantiou\u201d and the other one two years later, in 1936, with the \u201cAgnountos\u201d and \u201cMichael and Gabriel\u201d Nunneries. Striking awe awaits the visitor who observes the wood-curved iconostasis and the 18th-19th century icons exhibiting Virgin Mary and St. Demetrios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Currently id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-9-2ccdc2dc-afc5-46e0-a689-97e71e2cab1c\">\n\n<p>Climbing the steps from Lambrinidou Street in the picturesque<strong>\u00a0Psaromachalas<\/strong>\u00a0neighbourhood, one comes to one of the oldest surviving churches in the city,\u00a0<strong>the small single nave domed chapel, which is consecrated to Aghia Sophia.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>It is not beyond the realms of possibility that its construction dates back to Byzantine times, if we judge from the architectural elements that have been constructed in the Byzantine style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the Turks conquered the city&nbsp;<strong>in 1715, Christian churches were forbidden to operate within the walls of the city<\/strong>; the only church in which services were allowed was the church of Aghii Pantes, in the Pronia neighbourhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Somewhere between 1779 and 1780,<\/strong>&nbsp;Hassan-Pasha&nbsp;<strong>granted Aghia Sophia the right to hold Christian services for Christians<\/strong>&nbsp;living within the walls, after the intervention of his Greek interpreter, Nicholas Mavrogenis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>From then on, it was the only Christian church inside the walls that was allowed to hold services.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the liberation of Nauplion from the Turkish yoke,&nbsp;<strong>Aghia Sophia was renovated in 1825<\/strong>&nbsp;with funds donated by the Provost Marshal of Nauplion, Nasos prior to 1743, when it was also icon-painted.<\/strong>\u00a0A document, written and sent to the Venetians in 1696, mentions the existence of the chapel and\u00a0<strong>remains the most tangible proof of its erection prior to 1743.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"362\" inscription on the walls dated back to 1400.<\/strong>\u00a0This theory cannot be confirmed, since the chapel has undergone two fire blows, destroying the recorded dates on the sign. Another element to support the theory is the 1743 establishment date, inscribed on an icon, among others.\u00a0<strong>Attention-grabbing is also the fact that the chapel\u2019s floor is made of stone. shed some light is one, dating back to 1853, referring to the church as a nunnery<\/strong>, well-abandoned at the time. is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>The historical church of Aghii Pandes,&nbsp;<strong>which is found in the Pronia suburb,<\/strong>&nbsp;on a side street off Michail Iatrou,&nbsp;<strong>is built in the natural rock of a small hill.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its existence is known from the time of the second Venetian occupation.<strong>&nbsp;In 1715, when Nauplion was invaded by the Turks for the second time, Aghii Pandes was the only church in which Christians were allowed to worship,<\/strong>&nbsp;until 1780, when worship was also allowed in Aghia Sophia, a church located inside the city walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Surrounding<\/strong>&nbsp;the church was the&nbsp;<strong>old city graveyard,<\/strong>&nbsp;where several of the great personalities of the Greek revolution have been interred such as:<strong>&nbsp;Palaion Patron Germanos, Nikitaras and Staikos Staikopoulos.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This graveyard was&nbsp;<strong>operational until about 1852<\/strong>, when the modern one was built.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" I<strong>t still holds some morphological similarities with the church of \u201cAgia Moni\u201d in Nafplio,<\/strong>&nbsp;which immediately creates an association between the two.&nbsp;<strong>The location in which it is built was named \u201cVouzi\u201d,<\/strong>&nbsp;but presently utterly forgotten or unspoken of by the residencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"382\" src=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ieros-naos-koimisis-tis-theotokou-agia-triada-00002-jpg-webp-webp.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ieros-naos-koimisis-tis-theotokou-agia-triada-00002-jpg-webp-webp.webp 640w, https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ieros-naos-koimisis-tis-theotokou-agia-triada-00002-jpg-webp-webp-300x179.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There seems to be much speculation surrounding&nbsp;<strong>the exact date of the church\u2019s erection with the most prevailing one among scholars being either at the end of the 12th century or the early 13th one.<\/strong>&nbsp;The temple\u2019s frescoes are placed at a period around the end of the 13th century or even at the dawn of the 14th century; however they could have been created much later than the actual assembly of the temple itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Latin Bishop of Corinth&nbsp;<strong>Willen Van Moerbeke, Dominican,<\/strong>&nbsp;orientalist and philosopher had resided for a number of years in the monastery,&nbsp;<strong>after having been anointed as a bishop by Pope John the 21st, in 1277.&nbsp;<\/strong>The mention of Moerbeke\u2019s name and acts is apparent among many French historians, who describe him as a wonder scientist of his time. Perhaps the alternative, native name of the village, \u201cMerbakas\u201d, is so, honoring his name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>During the reign of the Venetians,<\/strong>&nbsp;the church is conceded to the Bishop \u201cHortatsis\u201d of Rethymno, Crete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Between the years 1715-1770- the last period of Turkish reign- the church\u2019s management is granted to the metropolitan Bishop of both neighboring towns, Argos and Nafplio.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Circumstantial to none is the recorded information gathered for the following years, regarding the fate of the cloister. It seems to have been structurally around in 1833, without any monks or cells whatsoever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Eventually, the area surrounding the monastery and the temple was trodden underfoot.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, to date, there are but a handful of locals, who know the existence of the church or its active role throughout the centuries, from the moment it had been built.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"343\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For quite some years, the churchyard&nbsp;<strong>had been used as a cemetery of the township \u201cAgia Triada\u201d or in translation \u201cHoly Trinity\u201d<\/strong>, yet with the cemetery removed, concerted efforts have been made to restore the area as well as the church itself and provide accessibility to any visitor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Assumption of Virgin Mary Church stands at the entrance of the village, following the route from Nafplio.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The church has such measurements (15, 67\u00d78, 45) and&nbsp;<strong>is potentially built upon ancient grounds,&nbsp;<\/strong>seeing that the church counts a number of tombstones, fragments of marble and ancient Greek dwelling \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Praiseworthy is the combination and the theme exchange of ancient material,<\/strong>&nbsp;decorative elements and Byzantine flair on the outside of the church.&nbsp;<strong>Architecturally, it is a complex cruciform temple, four-columned, including a dome.&nbsp;<\/strong>It has got four entrance-exit gates and its windows have been adorned with a serrated row of tiles.<strong>&nbsp;The decoration seems to be encompassing the whole of it, all four walls separated though into two main lines;<\/strong>&nbsp;the first starting off just in the rim of the gates and the second moving on from the point of the roof\u2019s elevation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>From the church\u2019s foundations to the first main decorative line, the structure has been built on ancient stones.<\/strong>&nbsp;The second line onwards has been erected on limestone.&nbsp;<strong>The temple\u2019s decorations in many parts present varied embossed images of fish, animal and oak leaves.<\/strong>&nbsp;The north eastern corner of the church reveals a decoration of an embossed head, encircled with rays, symbolizing the sun;<strong>&nbsp;the northwest side of the church presents a tombstone with a relief depiction of a couple, the west entrance gate holds a Roman inscription and the southern wall manifests a solar clock; all works of the church\u2019s ornamentation blackened.<\/strong>&nbsp;There is so much this conjecture that a possible fire blow might have been held responsible for this damage, however there is no witness to support this \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Part of the greatest Byzantine monuments across Greece,&nbsp;<\/strong>this church stands at the edge of the route connecting the region of \u201cPlataniti\u201d with that of \u201cAnyfi\u201d awaiting the visitors\u2019 admiration and respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It is a single-spaced, cross-shaped, domed church, which has also practiced ancient construction material<\/strong>, easily discerned, since there has been no coating on the outside, whatsoever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-27 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"315\" height=\"474\" distinguishable.<strong>&nbsp;The church\u2019s assembly can be chronologically placed somewhere around the late 11th or early 12th century AD.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bilobe windows of the temple encased<strong>&nbsp;by a constant sun-dried brick arch and a ceramic line are also worth noticing.&nbsp;<\/strong>What is more, the eight angle-shaped Athenian style dome is a sight hard not to admire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>There have been conscious efforts towards the church\u2019s reformation some years ago,&nbsp;<\/strong>yet, they have never been class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title ub-content-toggle-title-2ccdc2dc-afc5-46e0-a689-97e71e2cab1c\">The Catholic Church of Metamorphosis Tou Sotiros<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-toggle-wrap right\"><span class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-state-indicator wp-block-ub-chevron-down\"><\/span>\n                    <\/div><\/div><div role=\"region\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-content-wrap ub-hide\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-24-2ccdc2dc-afc5-46e0-a689-97e71e2cab1c\">\n\n<p>Climbing the steps from Potamianou Street, from Aghios Spiridon Square, we reach the Catholic church,\u00a0<strong>which has become known as \u2018Frankoklisia\u2019.<\/strong>\u00a0The age-old history of this church probably began during the time of the Frankish occupation,<strong>\u00a0when the church must have been used as a convent for Franciscan nuns.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Shortly before the outbreak of the Greek revolution, when Nauplion was still under Turkish control<strong>, the widow of the Aga-Pasha, Fatme, restored the church,<\/strong>&nbsp;which had fallen into disrepair, in memory of her husband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, even today,<strong>&nbsp;the church still maintains the appearance of a mosque,<\/strong>&nbsp;as much on the exterior, with its heavy proportions,&nbsp;<strong>as on the inside where there are niches for the Koran, the so-called michrab.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In 1839, King Otto gave the church to the Catholic Church,<\/strong>&nbsp;to provide for Greek Catholics and for the foreign Philhellenes,&nbsp;<strong>who helped Greece in her struggle for liberation;<\/strong>&nbsp;and also for the Bavarian soldiers who belonged to his escort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I<strong>t was Otto\u2019s decision that the church be dedicated to the transfiguration of the saviour<\/strong>, to commemorate the metamorphosis of Greece after its liberation from the Turkish yoke.<strong>&nbsp;After repairs, the church was officially opened in 1840<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"452\" src=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/katholiki-ekklisia-metamorfoseos-nafplio-00001-jpg-webp-webp.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2486 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/katholiki-ekklisia-metamorfoseos-nafplio-00001-jpg-webp-webp.webp 300w, \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As regards the interior of the church, there are\u00a0<strong>two points worthy of note:<\/strong>\u00a0the Apse of the Philhellenes and<strong>\u00a0picture of the Holy Family.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/katholiki-ekklisia-metamorfoseos-nafplio-00002-jpg-webp-webp.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2487\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/katholiki-ekklisia-metamorfoseos-nafplio-00002-jpg-webp-webp.webp 640w, https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/katholiki-ekklisia-metamorfoseos-nafplio-00002-jpg-webp-webp-300x190.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The simple wooden apse, donated by the French officer and passionate Philhellene, August Ilarion Touret,<\/strong>\u00a0decorates the interior of the entrance to the church, and dates from 1841.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" src=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/katholiki-ekklisia-metamorfoseos-nafplio-00003-jpg-webp-webp.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/katholiki-ekklisia-metamorfoseos-nafplio-00003-jpg-webp-webp.webp 640w, https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/katholiki-ekklisia-metamorfoseos-nafplio-00003-jpg-webp-webp-300x199.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The apse, which has&nbsp;<strong>become known as the Touret Apse<\/strong>, is&nbsp;<strong>made of pine and is in the form of the fa\u00e7ade of an ancient Greek temple<\/strong>, a well-known characteristic of neo-classical funeral monuments. It should be noted that the Catholic church&nbsp;<strong>has been in continuous operation from 1839 to the present day<\/strong>. The exact location of the Metamorphosis Tou Sotiros Catholic Church can be found below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Geographical Coordinates<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Catholic Church of Metamorphosis, Nafplio<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/rxcboXZk2nFaCDW97\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google Map<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>37.56610382919832, 22.798203393604105<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-block-cbaa5c60-2a3c-49ba-948c-9da2b42f0485\">\n                <div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title-wrap\"\" aria-controls=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-25-2ccdc2dc-afc5-46e0-a689-97e71e2cab1c\" tabindex=\"0\">\n                    <p class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-title ub-content-toggle-title-2ccdc2dc-afc5-46e0-a689-97e71e2cab1c\">The Monastery of &#8220;Talantiou&#8221;, Old-New (Arachnaio)<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-toggle-wrap right\"><span class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-state-indicator wp-block-ub-chevron-down\"><\/span>\n                    <\/div><\/div><div role=\"region\" aria-expanded=\"false\" class=\"wp-block-ub-content-toggle-accordion-content-wrap ub-hide\" id=\"ub-content-toggle-panel-25-2ccdc2dc-afc5-46e0-a689-97e71e2cab1c\">\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"366\" src=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/palaia-kai-nea-moni-talantiou-arachnaio-01-jpg-webp-webp.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2492\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/palaia-kai-nea-moni-talantiou-arachnaio-01-jpg-webp-webp.webp 640w, https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/palaia-kai-nea-moni-talantiou-arachnaio-01-jpg-webp-webp-300x172.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In a distance of 30 km away from the city of Nafplio<\/strong>, built between the mountain range of \u201cTrapezona\u201d and the \u201cArachnaio\u201d mountain, lies the village,&nbsp;<strong>else called \u201cHeli\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first, the oldest \u201cKatholikon\u201d of the Monastery of \u201cTalantiou\u201d is the holy church of&nbsp;<strong>\u201cthe Assumption of Virgin Mary\u201d<\/strong>, with a chapel next to it, situated on the east corner of the village,&nbsp;<strong>after the crossroads connecting \u201cArachnaio\u201d with another region, that of \u201cLygourio\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Church is made of stone, is cruciformed and has a square dome.&nbsp;<\/strong>The only entrance to the sanctuary is on the west side and the decoration is covered in tiles and plastic with a serrated line encompassing the arch, leading its way up to the entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>The church\u2019s interior&nbsp;<strong>does credit to the works of the 16th century Cretan School,<\/strong>&nbsp;even if the frescoes themselves are not very well preserved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No dedicatory sign has been salvaged, however the stonework and the untouched murals<strong>&nbsp;indicate that it must have been built somewhere within the Byzantine times.<\/strong>&nbsp;It is only possible that the dome has been constructed in much later years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The chapel, annexed next to the Church, has retained a wall painting dedicated to a saint, signed A.K, probably commemorating \u201cAgia Kyriaki\u201d.<\/strong>&nbsp;(\u201cAgia\u201d is the Greek definition for a saint). It is still a mystery that the residents of the village \u201cHeli\u201d still address it as \u201cAgia Marina\u201d, another saint\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"404\" src=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/palaia-kai-nea-moni-talantiou-arachnaio-02-jpg-webp-webp.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2493 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/palaia-kai-nea-moni-talantiou-arachnaio-02-jpg-webp-webp.webp 300w, https:\/\/nafplio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/palaia-kai-nea-moni-talantiou-arachnaio-02-jpg-webp-webp-223x300.webp 223w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It was in 1761 that the monks decided to change their place of worship to a New Monastery,&nbsp;<\/strong>with the Superior Father \u201cHeliotis Grigorios Koukiniotis\u201d personally attending and undertaking its erection. According to the dedicatory sign, in 1841, the whole north side of the church was renovated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The New Monastery was incorporated in 1892 with the Abbeys of \u201cAgnountos\u201d and \u201cGabriel and Michael\u201d for a long period of ten years.
